European standards for terminal blocks


In Europe the current rating of a component is determined by monitoring the temperature of the metal conductor as the current increases. When the temperature of the metal pin is 45°C above the ambient temperature, the measurer takes the current at this point as the nominal current value (or current value) for the device. another IEC specification is the allowable current value, which is 80% of the current. In contrast, the UL standard takes as the nominal current value of the device 90% of the current value when the temperature of the metal conductor is 30°C higher than the ambient temperature.

As can be seen, the temperature of the metal conductor section is a very important factor in all applications. For industrial equipment this is even more important. This is because industrial equipment is often required to operate in temperatures of up to 80°C. If the temperature of the terminal block is a further 30°C or 45°C higher than this, then the temperature of the terminal block will exceed 100°C. Depending on the type of nominal value and insulation material used for the selected device, the products must operate at a lower current than the rated value so that they can be guaranteed to work reliably over the desired temperature range. Sometimes, materials suitable for compact packages may not be well suited to the heat dissipation requirements, so such terminal blocks must be used at currents significantly below the nominal value. This demonstrates the importance of how the terminal block type is selected.

With the globalisation of companies and the need to design systems that can be sold worldwide, it is increasingly common for system designers to use terminal block products manufactured in other countries. Because Europe uses nominal measurements, it is common practice in Europe for devices to be designed for use below nominal values. However, many US designers are not familiar with this concept and without an understanding of the differences between the standards, the design process can be difficult
